Micro Inverter

Each micro inverter can act as a maximum power point tracker for the module it’s connected to, leading to a higher overall output.

Micro inverters are used to convert the DC output from a single solar module to AC. Several micro inverters are then connected in parallel and the overall AC output is then taken back to the main consumer unit.

This is in contrast with the more common ‘central’ or ‘string’ inverters, which support a number of modules, connected in series. These types of inverters convert the combined DC output of all the modules to an AC supply, which is taken back to the main consumer unit.

The fact that each inverter is only connected to one module gives you a number of advantages. The principal advantage being that shading on any one module affects only the output of that module and not that of the whole array. The same is true with regards to module failure. Added to this is that each micro inverter can act as a maximum power point tracker for the module it’s connected to, leading to a higher overall output.
